Call for Tutorials

The annual conference of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR) is the world’s leading research forum on processing, analyzing, searching, organizing and accessing music-related data. The 25th ISMIR conference, to be held in San Francisco, USA and online from November 10-14 2024, welcomes proposals for tutorials to be given in conjunction with the conference. Tutorials take place at the start of the ISMIR conference, and this year will be held on Sunday, Nov 10, 2024. Each tutorial is allocated 3 hours to concentrate on a single topic, with tutorials taking place in parallel sessions. Tutorials are expected to be delivered by at least one in-person presenter for quality of experience.

Finally, this year’s conference theme is “Bridging Technology and Musical Creativity“. With this, we aim to emphasize connections across core aspects of the community that might otherwise be considered in isolation or even overlooked. We thrive by inspiring and learning from each other, while remaining humble and acknowledging the current limitations and ethical challenges around bridging the technical innovations of the MIR community with real-world creative practice. We believe that it is only by working closely together – as musicians, researchers, and technology enthusiasts – that we can significantly advance our respective fields to achieve better expression, creative innovation, and human connection through music in ways that are currently beyond our imagination. And in what better place in the world could we extend such bridges than in the San Francisco Bay Area? We highly encourage tutorials that are related to this topic.

  • Relevance (i.e., of interest to the whole community or only a segment thereof)
  • Suitability to a general academic audience (rather than specialists in a particular subfield)
  • Quality, comprehensiveness and coverage
  • Originality of topics with respect to previous ISMIR tutorials
  • Novelty of authors with respect to previous ISMIR tutorials
  • Expertise of authors
  • Suitability for remote attendees
  • Complementarity of tutorials
  • If relevant, usage of open-source and free software tools/data, reproducible research
